Natural Ways to Keep Bugs Off You (Without Smelling Like a Science Project)

Whether you’re chasing cows, hiking with the kids, or just trying to grill in peace, bugs can ruin a perfectly good day outdoors. But if the thought of spraying yourself down with harsh chemicals makes your skin crawl more than the mosquitoes do, there’s good news: nature has your back.

Here are some effective, natural ways to keep bugs at bay — no lab coats required.

1. Essential oils that actually work
Lemongrass, eucalyptus, citronella, peppermint and lavender aren’t just for fancy soaps. When diluted properly (like 10 to 20 drops per ounce of carrier oil), these essential oils can help repel mosquitoes, ticks and gnats. Bonus: You won’t smell like a chemical plant.

2. Apple cider vinegar (because it’s good for everything)
Add a tablespoon or two of raw apple cider vinegar to your water daily. It may help change your body’s scent just enough to make you less appealing to biting bugs. It won’t stop all the pests, but it’s a solid line of defense (plus, your gut might thank you).

3. Wear light, tight and right
Mosquitoes are fashion critics — and they hate light colors. Wearing long sleeves, pants and light-colored clothing can help you stay less attractive to bugs. If you're in tall grass, tuck those pant legs into socks. It might not be glamorous, but neither is Lyme disease.

4. Plant-based bug barriers
Got potted plants or flower beds? Add citronella, mint or marigolds. These plants don’t just look pretty — they actively repel bugs. Keeping a few by your front door or picnic area can help reduce pest pressure.

5. Keep it clean
Standing water, open compost and sugary spills are prime bug real estate. Keep lids on trash, turn over buckets or tubs, and give your grill and patio furniture a quick wipe-down to keep flies and mosquitoes from calling it home.

A note of caution
Natural doesn’t always mean safe for everyone. Essential oils should never be used directly on young children, pets or pregnant women without proper guidance. Test a small area of skin before going all-in, and always do your homework — or better yet, talk to someone who already did.
